The average Cuban lives slightly longer than the average American, but the American's health care costs $5,711 a year while the Cuban's costs $251. Those figures are from the World Health Organization. Some experts question the accuracy of the Cuban numbers, but no one doubts the underlying revelation: There is little relationship between the cost of your health care and how long you'll live. .
Effexor sales boost Wyeth financials
NEWARK, N.J. Wyeth on Tuesday said its fourth-quarter profit rose 17 per cent, driven by sales of the antidepressant Effexor and the childhood infection vaccine Prevnar. Profit for the Madison-based drug maker grew to $855.4-million (U.S.), or 63 cents per share, from $731.7-million, or 54 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Results for the latest quarter included charges of 3 cents per share related to productivity initiatives. .
Heavily Advertised Drugs Not Always The Best Choice
The pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars every year advertising drugs directly to people like you. But we've found the most highly-promoted drugs are not necessarily your best choice. You'd have to have been in a deep sleep to have missed commercials with the Lunesta butterfly. Lunesta is the most heavily advertised prescription drug. But plenty of others get air time, like the acid reflux drug Nexium and the asthma medication Advair. Those ad campaigns are reaching their target audience, says Dr. Marvin Lipman, Consumer Reports' chief medical advisor. He reviewed a survey of 39,000 patients and 335 doctors to see what kind of requests doctors get in a typical week. "Seventy-eight percent of the physicians we surveyed said they've gotten 'I saw it on TV' requests," Lipman said.
