When "The Good Ol' Hockey Game" is no longer music to a rink rat's ears, something needs to change, and it changed for Andrew Parent when the Bishop Stang senior turned in his maroon-and-silver jersey for the red-and-black of the Mass Maple Leafs Premier Junior B team of the Continental Hockey Association.
The decision left some members of the Eastern Athletic Conference seeing red because it's only the latest loss of a member school's player to what is widely considered a rival interest — Junior B hockey. It's the volatile level of junior hockey between the high-level A leagues and the C teams that are tailor-made for off-season high school players.
Stang junior Kevin St. Pierre and GNB Voc-Tech's Bret Chaves left their high school teams for the Bridgewater Bandits' entry in the B-level Empire League.
Yen hits 3-week high against dollar
The yen hit a three-week high against the dollar and the euro on Tuesday as the Japanese currency continued to receive support ahead of the Group of Seven industrialised nations meeting of finance ministers and central bankers this weekend. The yen has rallied from a four-year trough against the dollar and an all-time low against the euro in the last week amid concerns that the weakness of the Japanese currency would be on the agenda at the meeting. European officials have led the chorus calling for the topic to be put up for discussion, but Japanese and US officials have played down the issue. However, Adrian Schmidt, senior foreign exchange strategist at Royal Bank of Scotland, said there appeared to be some fatigue with the G7 talk. He said there seemed to be a strong consensus that the official communique following the meeting would contain no specific comments on the yen.
BB King Released From Texas Hospital
HOUSTON -- B.B. King was discharged from a Galveston hospital Saturday following treatment for a fever and was "back to his old self," a spokeswoman for his management agency said. The 81-year-old, Grammy-winning bluesman was "feeling fabulous," said Tina France, vice president of Lieberman Management of New York. .
Sheffield Hospital Researching the Risk of Rare Child Cancer
A team from Sheffield Children's Hospital is undertaking some pioneering research to explore if DNA testing can identify children at risk of developing a rare form of cancer. Children, as well as adults, can suffer from 'reflux' - a continuous backward flow of acid stomach contents that damages the tissue of the oesophagus giving symptoms of heartburn. Some of these patients can then develop a condition called Barrett's oesophagus which can also mean that they have an increased risk of getting cancer of the oesophagus. The study, made possible by a 1,880 donation from the Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity, is the first ever to look into the relationship between children with Barrett's oesophagus and changes in the cell's DNA that make them more prone to developing cancer later in life.
