Transcript of NASA FY 2008 Budget Briefing 5 February 2007

MODERATOR: Good afternoon, and welcome to NASA Headquarters in Washington. I am David Mould with NASA Public Affairs.

Before I introduce the Deputy Administrator and the Administrator, just a few notes. We will start with questions from reporters here at Headquarters after opening remarks on our budget announcement, and then we will go to questions to the various NASA centers around the country.

I guess we will go ahead and start now by introducing the senior management of NASA, Administrator Mike Griffin and Deputy Administrator Shana Dale, and we will now turn it over to the Administrator.

ADMINISTRATOR GRIFFIN: Thanks, David.

Good afternoon to all of you and those looking at us on TV. I have got some brief remarks before opening the meeting up for questions, and let me say now that I did book some overflow time.

The Ypsilanti Courier

Retiring after 11 years as president of the Ypsilanti Area Chamber of Commerce, Keith Peters says golf and yard work won't keep him entertained.

"It's a matter of being able to spend time with my wife," he said.

Peters, 65, has been a resident of Ypsilanti Township for 41 years. He is to retire from his position and leave the chamber May 31 after 13 years of service.

It was a 22-year-old Peters who moved to Ypsilanti after graduating from the Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing in 1964. Peters worked as the senior minister of the First Christian Church in Ypsilanti and stayed with the church until 1983, after helping the church grow more than triple in size.

It was during this time that Peters met his wife, Betty, while serving as the assistant manager of a Christian Camp in Berkley.

Many Victims Not Yet Received Aid

TEMPO Interactive, Tangerang: More than a thousand (RW) 31 Perumnas III residents in Karawaci, Tangerang, were still trapped by flooding until yesterday (6/2). The evacuation team has not yet arrived. Government's aid has also not reached this location, which has been flooded since last weekend. The health of residents who are still staying on the second floors of houses or on houses' rooftops is becoming worse as they cannot resist the cold weather and lack food. Many are sick, complaining of indigestion or breathing difficulties, said Yuliah Iskandar, coordinator of the flood post on the outerskirts of the housing complex, yesterday. Other Perumnas III residents whose houses have not been flooded too much have tried to provide help. They delivered food by 'emergency boats' made out of drums or used car tires.
