“I walked the dog and took care of the kids," the Lawrence resident said. “I went to the doctor regularly."

But she will never forget Feb. 29, 2004.

“It was a Sunday and I got up and just didn't feel right," she said. “I was kind of achy and stuff. I just couldn't really get comfortable. ... It was in my back — kind of a stiff back. Then all of a sudden — this was after hours — I started sweating and I felt like I was going to faint."

Strole's husband took her to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where doctors tested her and found blockage in an artery. She was taken by ambulance to Kansas University Hospital, where she received a stent, a wire metal mesh tube used to prop open an artery.

Strole had suffered a heart attack.

“It doesn't run in my family," she said.

Man pleads guilty in vehicular homicide

A Grand Junction man pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing a woman in a car accident that happened after he stole a truck and crashed it as he was fleeing police.

Troy Cooksey, 38, pleaded guilty to felony counts of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault and two sentence-enhancing counts of being a habitual criminal in a plea agreement with prosecutors. The agreement calls for him to receive a 54-year sentence to prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 21.

Cooksey was charged with 11 other felony and misdemeanor counts, including first-degree murder, but those charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Cooksey appeared in court wearing a black-and-white-striped jail suit. Flanked by his attorneys, public defenders Ken Singer and Michele Devlin, he told Mesa County District Judge David Bottger he is taking medicine for acid reflux disease and headaches but said they do not affect his thinking.

Improve the way you and your doctor communicate

The doctor-patient relationship could use a prescription for communication.

That's the diagnosis by a recent survey from the Consumer Reports National Research Center of more than 39,000 patients and 335 primary care physicians. Nearly a third of patients surveyed said their doctor didn't adequately explain possible side effects about drugs prescribed. Two-thirds said their doctors never brought up the costs of treatments and tests. Meanwhile, 59 percent of doctors polled said their patients often failed to follow their prescribed course of treatment.

"What it tells me is that the patient has one perspective of what the relationship is all about and the physician has another very different perspective of what the relationship is all about," said Dr. Jim Lenhart, vice dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
