Lessening caffeine in teabags

Q: I've heard that steeping tea for 30 seconds and then pouring off the water and steeping the bag again in new water dramatically reduces the amount of caffeine in the tea. I'm wondering if this is correct. I love tea, but too much caffeine triggers my acid reflux.

A: Much of the caffeine in tea is released within the first half-minute of steeping. Your technique won't decaffeinate your tea completely, but it should help considerably. It might bring the caffeine level down enough so that tea no longer gives you terrible heartburn.

No Malfunction As Prince Rocks Halftime

Phew! CBS got through the halftime show without a "wardrobe malfunction." The Artist Formerly Known as a Munchkin of Wardrobe Dysfunction began by singing "Let's Go Crazy," but he didn't.

Prince, who became a Jehovah's Witness in the mid-1990s, no longer wears yellow, butt-baring pants as he did at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards (prompting Howard Stern's send-up at the '92 VMAs). The closest thing to a fashion statement Sunday night was an odd kerchief on his head. So the NFL had no repeat of the 2004 Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake show, which happened the last time CBS broadcast the game.

The 48-year-old Prince, who rose to stardom in the '80s with his distinctive fusion of R&B, funk, soul and rock, once looked androgynous and produced songs that (lest we forget) drove Tipper Gore nuts (and made her a fat target for anti-censorship types like Frank Zappa).

Chalk it up to Jayhawks

Waiting on Darrell Arthur to make a decision on his basketball future was giving Kansas coach Bill Self heartburn.

"We thought he was leaning to Baylor one day, and the next day we thought it was a Kansas lean," Self recalled.

Heck, even Texas was on the table for a while for the Dallas South Oak Cliff star as he struggled to decide which uniform to wear.

"The bottom line was, he didn't want to make a decision," Self said. "It never got crystal clear for him. He liked all the people who were recruiting him."

On May 10, the morning of his scheduled news conference, Arthur called. Self expectantly answered his cellphone. But no deal. Yet.

"He asked me a couple of questions, and that was it," Self said. "I'm sure he called other people, too.
